After his victory over Leonidas' 300, the Persian army under the command of Xerxes marched in the direction of the great Greek city-states. The Democratic Athens, first on the path of Xerxes' army bases its strength to their fleet, led by Admiral Themistocles. Themistocles forced on a reluctant alliance with the traditional rival of Athens, oligarchic Sparta, whose power lies with its superior infantry troops. But Xerxes still prevails in numbers over the sea and land.
